The Pennsylvania SPCA shared photos and videos of Arthur on Instagram, saying the corgi was found on a family farm in Lancaster County two weeks ago. Rescuers said that when Arthur was found, he had a head injury, which the family who found him initially believed was a result of crawling under the property’s fence.

The family turned him over to the PSPCA, which said veterinarians saw what appeared to be a gunshot wound in the corgi’s head while cleaning the area, and confirmed that he had been shot with X-rays. Rescuers said in their post: “Arthur had been shot at an angle that miraculously missed his brain. The bullet left a hole in Arthur’s head & caused damage to his airway passages and mouth.”

Arthur has been in the hospital since his rescue, where he is being given antibiotics and other medications, WTXF reported. Officials told the station that they hope he will make a full recovery.

Rescuers said there are bullet fragments remaining in Arthur’s head, but he remains “the most gentle and friendliest boy.”

Officials told WTXF that their officers are investigating the case.

The PSPCA is collecting donations to help cover the cost of Arthur’s care.
