Police: Driver hits, assaults officer in OVI crash

A suspected drunken driver crashed into an off-duty officer, then assaulted the officer during an altercation early Saturday, according to a Dayton police report.

The off-duty officer was headed north in his Jeep Liberty on South Smithville Road shortly before 1 a.m. when the driver of a Ford Explorer headed east on Linden Avenue ran a red light and smashed into the Jeep at the intersection, according to a Dayton police report.

The Ford driver, identified as 42-year-old Chauncey M. Johnson, then assaulted the off-duty officer following the crash, police said. The officer’s North Face jacket pocket was torn, and Johnson suffered hand injuries after he smashed the right rear window of his SUV, breaking the glass, the report stated.

Police noted that Johnson smelled of alcohol, and an open bottle of liquor was found in his driver’s seat, according to a police report.

Johnson was taken to Grandview Hospital for treatment of his injuries, then booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of assault on a police officer; and misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and transporting an open liquor container in a motor vehicle, according to police.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, online jail records show.
