Virgin cruise line’s Scarlett Lady launches

Richard Branson has launched a new endeavor.

The Scarlet Lady, the first ship of the Virgin cruise line launched Friday.

The cruise line is adults only and hopes to bank on younger travelers considering cruising for their vacation, CNN reported.

The ship, which is currently docked in the Port of Dover, England, will actually start taking trips in April from Miami with itineraries focusing on the Caribbean, Fox News reported.

Its trans-Atlantic trip from Liverpool to the U.S will have only 18 people on board before it starts its regular sailings, the Evening Standard reported.

To appeal to younger adult passengers, the ship has a spot called Razzle Dazzle and a Korean restaurant called Geonbae. And it will have one possible new feature rarely if ever found at sea -- a tattoo and body piercing parlor named aptly enough Squid Ink, CNN reported.

It also has the Instagram set in mind -- with Branson showing off what he called “the most grammable spot” -- a room of mirrors.

While recent coronavirus scare and other sickness outbreaks may have some second-guessing a cruise vacation, not all are staying away from cruising, with 30 million setting sail last year. In the decade prior, only 17.8 million stepped on board a ship, according to the Cruise Lines International Association, CNN reported.

And with the number of ships setting sail, ports are getting crowded and the ships themselves have an impact on the environment.

To offset the environmental impact, Branson said that single-use plastics are banned on his cruise ships.

The Scarlett Lady was built by Fincantieri and has 1,430 cabins. It can hold more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Of those cabins, 78 are called RockStar Suites with 15 considered Mega RockStar Suites categorized as Massive, Fab, Posh and Gorgeous Suites. Those rooms go for about $19,000 each. The regular cabins are $1,600 for three- and four-day voyages, CNN reported.

The Scarlett Lady will be joined by two other ships in 2021 and 2022.
