DAYTON — A University of Dayton senior, Jonas Fjeldberg, was selected by FC Cincinnati in the Major League Soccer Superdraft.
Fjeldberg, a midfielder, was the only player picked from the Atlantic 10, a release from the university stated.
He was the 27th pick in the second round and the 54th pick overall.
“I am really proud to represent UD and I’m excited for the opportunity that lies ahead,” Fjeldberg said.
“I could not have done it without the support of the UD community and the Red Scare. I want to thank everyone that has been a part of my journey through my time here at Dayton.”
Current Colorado Rapids Defender of the Year, Lalas Abubakar, was also a former Flyer. He was drafted in the first round and fourth overall in 2016 by the Columbus Crew.
UD’s head soccer coach, Dennis Currier, has had seven former players chosen in the draft, the university reported.
“Jonas is one of the most dynamic attacking players in college soccer,” Currier said.
“He is an excellent representative for the University of Dayton along with the Atlantic 10. It was extremely exciting to see him get drafted by FC Cincinnati since they are so close to us. Dayton has a very rich tradition of student-athletes who have moved onto the professional ranks and we are confident Jonas will do very well at the next level.”
Fjeldberg has had an impressive career at Dayton earning Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and team MVP. He also led the conference in goals, points, shots, shots on goal, and game-winning goals. Fjeldberg had nine assists, which was second in the A-10.
In his three years at Dayton, Fjeldberg totaled 17 goals, 17 assists, 51 points, and nine career games in 52 career games.
