An inmate at the Tri-County Jail died early this morning after he was injured during a fight at the facility in Mechanicsburg.
David Piersol, 39, of Union County, was assaulted while he was in the general housing unit of the jail late last week, according to information from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office. Piersol died shortly after 3:30 a.m. today at Miami Valley Hospital, and the Montgomery County Coroner's Office is performing an autopsy today.
Matt Melvin, Champaign County Sheriff, said his office is investigating the incident. Piersol was facing charges that included rape, gross sexual imposition and sexual battery involving a three-year-old girl. He was arrested in February and was in jail awaiting trial.
