Tecumseh bus driver that saved student’s life honored by local officials

CLARK COUNTY — A bus driver at an area school was honored Monday for quick thinking that saved a student’s life.

The family of a seventh grader is still grateful for the woman who saved their son.

A video posted to the district’s social media page shows the bus driver April Wise slowing down to make one of her stops.

As she stops the bus and opens the doors, she can be seen checking her mirrors when she noticed something wrong.

“Whoa wait, wait! Stay, stay,” Wise yelled.

Wise quickly snatches a student by their backpack and pulls them back. Moments later, an SUV comes barreling into the frame, stopping next to the bus.

“The only thing that went through my brain was to keep him from getting off the bus,” Wise said.

The parents of the student expressed their gratitude Monday, along with district law enforcement and state representatives.

“It’s a testament to what people should do and they actually do,” State Representative Bernie Willis said.

The video of Wise saving a student will be used as an example of what is expected when caring for students — and raise awareness on the importance of stopping for buses.

“I so don’t deserve this but I’m glad it’s bringing awareness and hopefully more people take it into consideration,” Wise said.
