GREENVILLE — A stretch of state Route 49 was dedicated to a Greenville man killed in Vietnam.

SR-49 between Heritage Road and Delisle Fourman Road was dedicated to 1st Lt. Gerald Greendyke Saturday.

Greendyke graduated from Greenville High School in 1960 and went on to serve in the Army in 1962, according to a media release.

He was stationed in Iran, where he played for the Middle East All-Star Basketball Team and had two children with his wife Patricia.

Greendyke was discharged from the Army, only to return to service as an officer. He was deployed to Vietnam in August 1967.

He was killed six months later on Feb. 3, 1968.

Despite being asked to pull back, Greendyke attended to his wounded radio-telephone operator until he died from his injuries.

He was posthumously awarded both the Bronze Star Medal with the “V” device and the Silver Star medal in 1968.
