An 11-year-old Sidney boy was honored for his quick action at a car accident Tuesday morning.
According to Sidney police, Hurley Marrs was walking to Longfellow School when he heard a crash several blocks away. He sprinted to the scene of a one-vehicle accident where a driver had hit a telephone pole.
Hurley used his cell phone to call 911 — and his mother, Rachel Ratliff — then waited with the driver until help arrived.
Sidney Police Officer Kyle Lambdin said he was so impressed by Hurley’s willingness to run to the scene and help a stranger, he recommended Hurley for recognition.
Lambdin went to the school and in the presence of Hurley’s entire class, presented the lad with a Sidney Police Department/Crime Stopper’s Challenge coin.
A police department dispatcher also noted how well Hurley did in providing details of the accident while on the call to 911.
Lambdin told Hurley to stop by the police department in about 10 years for an application.
“Way to go, Hurley! We are proud of you!” Chief William Balling wrote in a public post on the police department’s Facebook page.
