“It’s very dangerous for the animal to put them in that kind of position. And secondly, it is against the law to abandon animals. So we understand the community’s frustration that the shelters were full,” Brian Weltge, CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton said.
Weltge said the shelter’s top concern is if the person has more sick puppies, not legal action.
All the puppies are sick with highly contagious parvovirus.
“We don’t know right now if he has other puppies in his home .... So that’s the reason we’re trying to identify and get some help identifying him,” Weltge said. “We will send an agent out to where he is, when we know who he is, just to find out there’s no other animals in harm’s way.”
Although there is a wait at least for healthy surrendered animals, the shelter will take in and help owners of sickly animals.
Vets at the shelter told News Center 7 that two of the seven puppies are getting better, and the other five are in critical condition.
We will continue to follow this story.
