Roof collapses on 2 firefighters during house fire in Bethel Twp.

BETHEL TWP. — A roof collapsed on two firemen while they battled a house fire on Corvette Avenue in Bethel Twp. Saturday around 10 a.m.

The two firefighters were able to evacuate the building safely after the roof collapsed.

One cat is unaccounted for, but no one else was injured, according to crews on scene.

Two vehicles in the driveway also caught fire, but they are believed to still be drivable.

Crews say the front of the home was heavily damaged.

Deputies arrived to the scene in the 900 block and found a fully engulfed garage. The crews called in mutual aid from New Carlisle, Bethel, Miami Twps., and Wright Patterson Air Force Base to help extinguish the fire.

The homeowner, Lee Coppe, told News Center 7 he was in the shower when the fire started.

“I thought it was something falling off a shelf. I didn’t see anything. Then, I started smelling smoke,” said Coppe.

Coppe then heard his neighbor banging on the door telling them to get out because the house was on fire.

Coppe and his wife escaped out of the back door with no injuries.

The Red Cross has contacted the Coppe family and their insurance company is finding them a place to stay.

News Center 7 crew also reported seeing neighbors show up with clothes, food and other needs.
