Man, 73, killed in single-vehicle crash near Wapakoneta

A Lakeview, Ohio man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Auglaize County Tuesday night.

Earl Douglas Shirk, 73, was driving on Middle Pike near Town-Line Lima Road when he reportedly drove off the left side of the road and struck a ditch and tree, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Auglaize County Coroner’s Office.

Shirk was not wearing a seat belt in his 2011 GMC Sierra. Alcohol is not suspected but the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating whether a health issue is to blame in a fatal single-vehicle crash near Wapakoneta in Auglaize County.

The accident was reported about 8:30 p.m. on Middle Pike, between state Route 65 and TownLine Road just east of Wapakoneta.

A state patrol dispatcher said more information would be released once the next of kin has been notified.
