Broadcaster Thom Brennaman resigns from role with Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds responded to Thom Brennaman’s resignation on Twitter Friday afternoon.

In the tweet, CEO Bob Castellini thanked Brennaman for his years in the booth and applauded his efforts of reconscilation with the LGBTQ+ community.

Suspended Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman has announced he plans to resign from his role with the Major League Baseball club and Fox Sports Ohio, according to a report from WCPO-TV in Cincinnati.

“My family and I have decided that I am going to step away from my role as the television voice of the Cincinnati Reds,” Brennaman said in a statement to WCPO’s Evan Millward.

"I would like to thank the Reds, Reds fans and the LGBTQ Community for the incredible support and grace they have shown my family and me.”

“I am grateful for the forgiveness so many have extended to me, especially those in the LGBTQ community who I have met, spoken with and listened to almost daily over the last five week,” Brennaman added in his statement to WCPO Friday. “With their continued guidance, I hope to be a voice for positive change.”

Brennaman had been suspended by the Cincinnati Reds after the veteran broadcaster was caught saying a homophobic slur on a hot mic as the Reds, Royals game returned to the air on Fox Sports Ohio last month.

Brennaman was also pulled from the Fox national NFL broadcasts after his use of the slur.

Thom is the son of Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman, who retired from his role as the radio voice of the Reds at the conclusion of the 2019 season.
