Pump Patrol: How auditors make sure you get what you pay for at the pump

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Joseph Harris with the Montgomery County Auditor’s weights and measures department has been doing this for nine years.

He and his team inspect around 6,000 gas pumps in Montgomery County.

Karl Keith, Montgomery County auditor, said his job is to protect the consumer and the retailer.

“At this day and age, the price of gas as high as it is, it’s important for people to know that the pumps have been checked,” Keith said.

Keith said the worse case he has seen was a pump that was giving five gallon of gas away for the price of one gallon.

They were able to catch the mistake and shut the pump down right away.

In that case, as well as others, gas stations have 24 to 48 hours to fix the issue.

Part of Keith’s job is to also catch credit cart skimmers on pumps.

“Thieves could get into those pumps within 30 seconds, open the pump, place the skimmer and then drive off. It was a major problem throughout the state,” Keith said.

There hasn’t been a credit card skimmer found in Montgomery County since 2018 after measures were put in place such as multiple locks and alarms.

As temperatures warm up there will be more auditors at the pumps making sure you get what you paid for.
