XENIA — A local police department is mourning the loss of a retired sergeant.

James L. West passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Kettering Medical Center surrounded by his wife and three daughters, according to his online obituary.

He worked at the Xenia Police Division for 28 years and retired as a Police Sergeant.
“He will be remembered for his advocacy, carpentry work, and the love of his family,” the department wrote on social media.
West started his law enforcement career with the Central State University Police Department, his obituary stated.
The City of Xenia posted a tribute to Sgt. West on its Facebook page.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of James L. West, a dedicated member of the Xenia Police Division for 28 years who retired as a Police Sergeant. Services will be held on Jan. 27 at McColaugh Funeral Home. Please join us in honoring his memory.”
A gathering for friends and family will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, at McColaugh Funeral Home on N. Detroit Street. The funeral is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., his obituary said.
Instead of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Violence Free Futures or Family Promise of Greene County.
