LATEST: Boyfriend jailed on charges in nearly 8-hour Preble County standoff

UPDATE @ 8:05 p.m.:  Brian Miller, 38, has been booked into the Preble County Jail on several felony and misdemeanor charges accusing him of detaining his girlfriend and her 2-year-old daughter for nearly eight hours at their home on Gratis-Jacksonburg Road in Somerville.

Sheriff Mike Simpson said the investigation will be forwarded to the county prosecutor’s office for review and the formal filing of the following charges: abduction, felonious assault (both felonies), domestic violence, obstruction official business and endangering children (all three are misdemeanors).

UPDATE @ 6:44 p.m.:

A man is on his way to jail, accused of causing the hours-long standoff in Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson said began as a domestic-related incident when the man detained a woman and child against their will.

Montgomery County SWAT and a county Hostage Negotiation Team were called to the house in the 10,000 block of Gratis-Jacksonburg Road when deputies, after getting the woman and child out of the house safely, were unable to get the man to come out peaceably.

Simpson said the woman told authorities the man, armed with a small-caliber rifle, had detained her and her child since Sunday night. The sheriff said she told them he wouldn’t let her out of the house and wouldn’t let her have access to the phone.

She was finally able to get to the phone early Monday morning and send a text to a family member.

“That initiated the call to the sheriff’s office,” Sheriff Simpson said.

Deputies have recovered a rifle they believe the man used to threaten the woman and law enforcement if they tried to arrest him, the sheriff said.

He said there is a history of domestic violence between the man and woman, but would have to check his records to see whether deputies have been dispatched to the address in the past.

The man was treated at the scene for exposure to tear gas, Simpson said, and the woman and child are with family.

Residents living nearby were denied access to their homes because of the incident, he said.

UPDATE @ 6:25 p.m.: One person has been arrested to end the Preble County standoff that lasted nearly eight hours.
