Factors included:

  • The natural beauty of each state
  • Safety of each state
  • Mean elevation
  • The number of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) marathons and also regular running races that take place over a year
  • Air quality and the average temperature in each state

1. Florida

Florida was said to be the best place to go running in America according to the study. The sunshine state is one of the flattest states and has some wonderful beaches.

2. Ohio

Our very own buckeye state came in as the second-best state in the U.S. to go running in. The study found that we may not rank that high in natural beauty but we do rank higher on safety than most. The average temperature here is around 52.1°F which is close to the optimal running temperature (51.5°F.)

3. California

Coming in at third place is California. Researchers found the diverse races, marathons, and stunning scenery are good reasons for its ranking.

4. New York

New York slides into fourth place. Like Ohio, the state of New York may not rank that high in natural beauty, but they do rank high in safety.

5. Washington

In fifth place, Washington takes its spot. Out of the top five states in this list, Washington is said to be the safest. However, this state does have a higher mean elevation of 1,700 feet, making it double that of Ohio’s elevation.
