Ohio Navy Corpsman among 13 US service members killed in Afghanistan airport attack

A Navy Hospital Corpsman from Ohio was among the 13 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in a bombing attack on Thursday, according to our news partners at WTOL 11 in Toledo.

Max Soviak, a 2017 graduate of Edison High School, was killed from the attack at the Kabul airport, a family member confirmed to WTOL 11.

The Soviak family provided a photo of Max to WTOL 11 and asks for privacy at this time.

The Navy also confirmed in a brief statement on Friday that one of their sailors was killed during the attack but did not provide additional details.

“We mourn the loss of this Sailor and we offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of our fallen shipmate,” the Navy’s statement said.

In addition to 13 U.S. service members, at least 95 Afghans were killed during the attack as thousands of people continue to try to flee the county amid the Taliban takeover.

All U.S. and Ohio flags at public buildings and grounds were ordered Friday morning to fly at half-staff through at least sunset of August 30, according to an order issued by Gov. Mike DeWine.
