State police ID man shot, killed by Indiana deputy on I-70

HENRY COUNTY, INDIANA — UPDATE @ Noon:

The man shot and killed by a deputy in Henry County, Indiana has been identified as Michael R. Gulley, 32, of Greenfield, Indiana, according to the Indiana State Police.

Gulley was found walking on Interstate 70 by a deputy with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office. When the deputy asked if he needed help, Gulley allegedly displayed a handgun. He was shot by the deputy and later died from his injured at a hospital in New Castle, investigators said.

State police are still unsure why Gulley was walking on the highway. The vehicle they believe he was driving was found about two miles east of where the shooting took place, investigators said.

The investigation blocked all westbound lanes until around 10:30 a.m.

The deputy, who was not injured in the incident, has not been identified.

All westbound lanes of Interstate 70 reopened around 10:30 a.m. after Indiana State Police investigated a deadly officer-involved shooting.

Additional details, including the identities of the man shot and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved, were not released.

FIRST REPORT

All westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are shut down west of Richmond, Indiana for the investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting, according to Indiana State Police.

Police are expected to block I-70 West between the Cambridge City exit, state Route 1, and New Castle exit, state Route 3, until 11 a.m., state police said in a media release Tuesday morning.

Deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a suspicious person wearing all black on I-70 around 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

The deputy approached the subject, who has only been identified as a man, and asked the man if he needed help.

While talking with the deputy the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the deputy, state police said. Shots were fired by the deputy, which hit the man.

The man was transported to the Henry County Community Health Hospital in New Castle where he later died from his injuries, police said.

The identity of the man has not been released, pending notification of family.

The deputy was not injured in the incident and their identity was also not released.
