If you have lived in the Dayton area for any length of time, you undoubtedly have driven by or seen photos of the gorgeous Springfield Masonic Community, located near the intersection of State Routes 68 and Route 4/40. For 125 years, the castle on the hill has provided personalized housing and tailored amenities to those 55 and over.

But the second someone says “Masonic,” imaginations either run wild or draw a blank. Here is a truer picture of Masons and the senior living communities they support…

Myth: Masons are a secretive society, and you have to be a Mason to live in a Masonic community.

Fact: Not true. Masons are just a group of people who believe in standing up for what's right. Springfield Masonic Community is a living expression of its Masonic obligation – to help all people age respectfully, how they want and where they want. The community is open to everyone, aged 55 and over, and no Masonic affiliation is required.

Myth: Retirement communities are for sick people.

Fact: Nope. You shouldn't wait until you are sick to consider moving to a retirement community. For those 55 and better, now is the time to shine and to prepare for the future, when the choice is yours.

Myth: Being part of the community means residents won't have any privacy or downtime.

Fact: Residents can be as involved in the community as much or as little as they want.

Myth: A new home still means work.

Fact: Living in a retirement community means not worrying about chores like mowing the grass and shoveling the snow. It's a maintenance-free lifestyle so you have more time to enjoy life.

Myth: Everyone at a senior living facility goes to bed at 7 p.m.

Fact: False -- there is always something to do! More than 120 organizations are available to residents including club meetings, planned trips, campus life, resident-driven projects and monthly theme dinners.

Myth: Senior living community residents just sit around and watch television all day.

Fact: Residents can continue their favorite hobbies and even pursue new hobbies like painting, woodwork and sewing. They also can spend time with the trainer in the fitness center, or try a sit-down exercise class.

Myth: Retirement communities are located out in the middle of nowhere, far from city life, friends and family.

Fact: Springfield Masonic Community is not far from Dayton or Columbus. It's possible to take the grandkids to the zoo, and because you don't have to rush home to take care of household chores, you can spend more quality time with your family.

A Masonic community is more than what you might have heard or believed to be true, and retirement can be better than you imagined. It can be vibrant, social, independent, and free from the demands of home upkeep.
