Man who stabbed, killed a man with ‘Samurai sword’ pleads not guilty by reason of insanity

GREENVILLE — The man who stabbed and killed another man with a ‘samurai sword’ had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Matthew McKnight, 48, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, according to Darke County Common Pleas Court documents filed on Feb. 4.

News Center 7 previously reported that McKnight stabbed and killed 35-year-old Kyle Brown with a “Samurai sword” after Brown asked him for a cigarette around 10 p.m. on Nov. 16, 2024.

This occurred in the 600 block of Walnut Street in Greenville.

McKnight filed a motion for a competency evaluation in November but was found competent to stand trial according to court documents.

On Thursday, a Darke County judge filed a record ordering McKnight to the Forensic Psychiatry Center for Western Ohio for “purposes of evaluating the Defendant’s sanity at the time of the commission of the offense.”
