I-70 ramp closure detour changed to SR 235 after concerns from Huber Heights mayor

After concerns from the Huber Heights mayor and drivers about a road project set to close I-70 east to I-75 north, sending drivers on a detour through State Route 202, ODOT now has a new plan.

“The final solution was moving it further down to State Route 235,” said Huber Heights mayor, Jeff Gore.

Gore said the city first learned about the planned ramp closure after ODOT sent out an announcement, and News Center 7 reached out to ODOT to get a statement.

ODOT said they communicated news about the project and intended detour at State Route 202 in a letter to Huber Heights. They then asked for any feedback on the plans by May 21st of 2020, but never received a follow up.

“Was it overlooked? I don’t know. I can’t speak to that. All I know is we were surprised when the email came out,” said Gore.

Gore says even though the signage will now lead drivers to SR 235, he expects some people who know the area well to use other routes to get around the project.

Although, he believes the majority of drivers will still follow ODOT’s detour signs.

The safety improvements, which includes replacing some pavement in the area, will begin Monday and continue for at least two months.
