Built in 1908, this is the famous American architect's only Prairie Style home in Ohio, and it remains one of the country's best Wright House museums. In 2005, the Westcott House underwent a $5.3 million inch-by-painstaking-inch renovation to restore it to its 1908 appearance. We recommend taking one of their 90-minute tours, so you can learn all about the home's rich history.
The Mad River is actually a spring creek. It is the largest cold-water fishery in Ohio and is one of the few streams where brook trout reside. The Mad River is regularly stocked by the state of Ohio with six- to eight-inch brown trout, so load up your fishing gear and waders and head out! The river has several access points at bridges where county roads pass over it.
At about 116,000 square feet, Springfield's Heart of Ohio Antique Center is the nation's largest indoor antique mall, featuring over 650 dealers that span nearly every genre of collecting. If you can't find what you're looking for at Heart of Ohio, the chances are it doesn't exist!
What began as a simple concrete fish pond in H.G. (Ben) Hartman's backyard is now hailed as a folk art masterpiece, featuring over 250,000 individual stones. The sheer scale of the work, and its location in a residential neighborhood, contribute to its status as an iconic "outsider" art site. Completely restored by the Kohler Foundation in 2009, the garden is open daily from dawn to dusk with no admission charge.
Spanning an entire city block, the Heritage Center houses an outstanding museum that faithfully recounts the history of America's Heartland. Hosting approximately 30,000 visitors each year, adults and children alike have been fascinated by the exhibits on display. Best of all -- admission is free.
Springfield's first, and only, craft brewery is a family-owned, family-friendly operation conveniently located in downtown, which currently is undergoing a revitalization. The brewery features a spacious tap room and bar area with ample accommodations, as well as an outdoor seating area. The actual brewery is visible, so patrons can see all of the equipment involved in the brewing process. Tours of the brewery are available. Currently, they do not serve food, but they do have a food truck that visits frequently.
