Dog dead after apartment fire in Riverside

RIVERSIDE — A dog died in an apartment fire in Montgomery County on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was reported in the 700 block of Old Harshman Road around 3 p.m.

The Red Cross was called to help people living in the apartment on the first floor due to the damage.

Riverside Battalion Chief Scott Wallace said a person in the parking lot spotted the flames coming from a unit and called 911.

Fire crews saw heavy smoke coming from the first-floor unit when they pulled up.

Firetrucks filled the parking lot as several surrounding fire departments showed up to help.

Wallace said some people stayed in their units while others evacuated when they smelled smoke.

The fire spread to the two adjoining units on the first floor.

Wallace said the unit where the fire started is a total loss.

Crews were able to isolate the electricity and gas to the affected unit, so they did not have to shut it off for the entire property.

Crews are still working to learn what started this fire. The people living in the unit were not home at the time of the fire.
