Fellow watercraft users help kayaker to safety on Stillwater River

UPDATE @ 5:54 p.m.: The young man firefighters rescued from a tree stump on the Stillwater River in Union Twp. told authorities his kayak overturned and he couldn't get back into it or make it safely to shore, Union Fire Capt. Zach Marvin said.

People nearby in kayaks and canoes helped him to a tree stump, the captain said, noting the river was “up.”

He said Butler Twp. deployed a boat to get the man and deliver him to a drop point on Old Springfield Road.

The man refused medical attention and told his rescuers he wasn’t injured.

UPDATE @ 4:47 p.m.:

Fire/rescuers have located a male who had been in a kayak when he became stranded on an island on the Stillwater River.

Rescuers have put the victim in a boat and they are headed downstream toward Old Springfield Road.

A man who identified himself as a friend said the victim was with others who were kayaking on the river.

We’re hearing the others who were with the victim are not injured.
