Egg in the nest, Dayton eaglet arrival about five weeks away!

DAYTON — In this frigid weather, eagle parents Orv and Willa will be busy keeping their soon-to-be eaglet warm.

Tuesday, Carillon Historical Park eagle expert, Jim Weller, confirmed the pair started showing incubation behavior, meaning there is an egg in the nest.

He explained, this means the eaglet should hatch around March 23rd. Weller also expects Willa to lay another egg or two this week.

“A lot of work for mom AND dad but a lot of fun for us,” Weller told News Center 7′s Molly Koweek.

This is the fourth season Orv and Willa have nested in a tree in Carillon Historical Park.

The pair’s first offspring, Flyer, died less than a week after its first flight.

The following year, Orv and Willa welcomed Aero and Prairie. After fledging, Prairie showed signs of poor health, so wildlife experts took the bird to the Glen Helen Raptor Center in Yellow Springs. 12 days later, Prairie was released back into the wild with Orv and Willa.

Last year, during the pandemic, the arrival of Prop and Rudder gave bird watchers something to be excited about.
