— Thundersnow, sometimes called a winter thunderstorm, is a real but rare weather phenomenon, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Molly Coates.
With a typical thunderstorm, ice particles begin colliding within the cloud, creating positive and negative charges. Once there is enough energy built up, there will be a release resulting in thunder and lighting.
