Did you hear thunder this morning? Storm Center 7 meteorologist explains why

Snow and lightning in Carlisle, Warren County

Thundersnow, sometimes called a winter thunderstorm, is a real but rare weather phenomenon, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Molly Coates.

With a typical thunderstorm, ice particles begin colliding within the cloud, creating positive and negative charges. Once there is enough energy built up, there will be a release resulting in thunder and lighting.

This same process occurs with thundersnow. This happens when, during a winter storm, we occasionally hear a loud clap of thunder accompanied by heavy snowfall.
