Coroner IDs 16-year-old boy killed in accidental shooting while taking social media videos with gun

DAYTON — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified a 16-year-old boy who died after police say he was accidentally shot on Sunday.

As previously reported by News Center 7, Dayton Police responded to the 700 block of Burwood Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Sunday on reports of a shooting.

The coroner’s office identified the boy as Tyron Smith, 16, according to Dr. Kent Harshbarger, Montgomery County Coroner.

When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the chest, Maj. Brian Johns confirmed.

An initial investigation showed that the victim showed up at the home with a semi-automatic handgun.

He and three other minors were passing the gun around to take photos and videos for social media when one of them pointed the gun and accidentally fired a shot, hitting the victim.

Medics transported Smith to Miami Valley Hospital where he died Sunday night.

The cause and manner of his death have not been determined, the coroner’s office said.

Dayton Police continues to investigate the shooting.
