Coronavirus: Fairmont teacher starts ‘Frontline Firebirds’ social media campaign

KETTERING — A Fairmont math teacher, Amber Brewer, began what is known as the Frontline Firebirds social media campaign, honoring Fairmont graduates who are working on the frontlines during this pandemic.

The idea came to Brewer after she saw something her gymnastics coach at Bowling Green posted.

Brewer then thought of a former student she had that was sent to New York to help with the pandemic.

“So the first time I saw it on Facebook I got super excited to kind of see my idea come to life. Then to see people commenting and liking it. I was really excited to get those people noticed and appreciated for what they’re doing," Brewer said.

Now, many more stories just like it have come out of Fairmont grads all across the country since this started at the beginning of the month.

Brewer says her hope is that it could maybe even lift frontline workers’ spirits after a challenging day at work.

Fairmont graduate, Erin Short, who is now a nursing student said she was surprised at the variety of frontliners, not just the people that have been working in the healthcare field.

“I’ve always said ‘Forever a Firebird. I actually have it behind my desk on a wall where I put all my students’ senior pictures,” Brewer said.
