Committee seeking artist for public memorial for victims of Oregon District shooting

DAYTON — The 8/4 Memorial Committee is looking for artists and other creatives to design a public artwork to serve as a memorial for the victims of the Oregon District Shooting.

On Aug. 4, 2019, a gunman opened fire on Fifth Street. In the 32 seconds before police killed him, he shot dozens of people. Nine of the victims, including the shooter’s sister, died.

Those interested can apply on the Contemporary Design’s website here, submissions are due by Dec. 5.

Up to five artist will be chosen and paid a stipend of $1,500 each to present a final design, according to a release.

The winning artist will receive an award of $200,000 to create the memorial.

“This memorial will play a major role in the healing of our community,” Sandy Hunt, co-chair of the 8/4 Memorial Committee, said . “Survivors, family members of victims, and the general public all provided us with their perspectives on what this artwork will mean to those who were affected by the tragedy. It’s important to us to provide something accessible and meaningful to support everyone’s recovery.”

Artists, or at least on member of their team, must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a current or recent resident of the Dayton area
  • Have a connection to a current or recent resident of the Dayton area
  • Have a connection to or have been affected by the Oregon District Shooting or a similar event
