Cincinnati Shooting: Police release extended body camera footage

CINCINNATI — Extended body camera footage showing Cincinnati police respond to a deadly shooting at the Fountain Square Fifth Third Bank Sept. 6 has been released.

Cincinnati police posted approximately 13 minutes of body camera on their Facebook page.

The footage shows police pulling up to the scene and getting into place before shooting through Fifth Third’s front windows and entering the building.

Parts of the footage was redacted to “exclude victims and medical procedures being performed by first responders,” according to the post.

Three people — Richard Newcomer, Pruthvi Raj Kandepi and Luis Felipe Calderon — were killed. Whitney Austin and Brian Sarver were injured during the shooting, but have been released from the hospital.

The gunman was shot and killed by police on the scene.

Lisa Sarver, Brian’s wife, said she prays every day and thanks God her husband is still alive.

As Brian Sarver begins his road to recovery, he has an entire community cheering him on.

“He’s trying to be as mobile as possible so that he can heal as quickly as possible,” said The River Church pastor, the Rev. Brad Mitchell.

Mitchell has known Sarver eight years through church and is one of the many people rooting for him as he continues to recover.

“He’s a good man,” Mitchell said. “A man of integrity. He’s got a lot of strength, inner strength and determination, but it’s all packed into a very peaceful, kind personality.”

Sarver is an assistant coach for the Lebanon Warriors fourth-grade football team.

The players, which include Sarver’s twin boys, have stickers on their helmets in his honor, while the cheerleaders have ribbons.

“Brian’s been great with our kids,” Jeromy Guerra, the Warriors’ coach, told WLWT’s Karin Johnson. “He’s really great. Really likes trying to show them the right way to learn the game. Has fun with the kids.”

Guerra said he’s grateful that Sarver is home and healing.

“He’s doing better,” Guerra said. “He’s sore. Still having trouble sleeping.”

Sarver also is a contractor through CBRE.

Last night, he released a statement through the company saying, “I would like thank God for protecting me during the shooting.”

“My immediate focus is getting well again,” he said. “I look forward to getting back on my feet and returning to work as soon as practical.”
