Cheryl Coker laid to rest almost 2 years after disappearance

RIVERSIDE — A public visitation was held today remember Cheryl Coker, whose remains were found off a rural road in Greene County more than a year after she went missing.

The visitation was held at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions. Following the visitation, the family held a private Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Helen Catholic Church in Riverside. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.

Cheryl Coker’s remains were found off Waynesville Jamestown Road in April. She had been missing since October 2018.

While a cause and manner of death were unable to be determined for her death, coroner’s office investigators suggested her death was related to foul play.

“Due to the condition of the remains, near complete skeletonization, the precise cause of death could not be determined,” the coroner’s report read. “However, the circumstances surrounding the disappearance as developed by law enforcement investigators, and death, as the post mortem changes are consistent with the time period and clothing is reported to be what was worn at the time of the disappearance, suggest the cause of death is related to foul play and as such a common term used to certify the cause of death is homicidal violence of unknown etiology.”

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over as the lead agency for the investigation shortly after Cheryl Coker’s remains were found.

There were no updates to share in the case, however the investigation into Cheryl Coker’s death remains “open and active,” Ohio BCI spokesman Steve Irwin said Monday.
