Area police to hold ‘Click it or Ticket’ campaign later this month

The Miami Township Police Department is planning to ramp up enforcement of Ohio’s seat belt law this coming Memorial Day weekend.

As part of a national campaign, the department will be keeping a close eye on safety violations from May 22 through June 4, according to a release.

“Not only will we be looking for motorists who are not wearing their seat belts, but we will also watch for child safety seat violations, OVI, speed, and other traffic violations,” Sgt. James McCarty said.

Ohio law says motorists must wear a seat belt, including the front-seat passenger.

The department also wants parents and guardians to know children between the age of four and eight and under 4 feet 9 inches must ride in a booster seat or a child safety seat appropriate for their age or size.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that 576 unbelted motorists were killed in 2021, up 15% from 2020.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety says seat belts provide the best protection against ejection in a crash.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, wearing seat belts is the most effective way to prevent being thrown from the vehicle during a crash.
