Area engineering students win top three places in Xtreme Bots contest

CENTERVILLE — Engineering students at Centerville High School earned the top three places in the Xtreme Bots contest last Friday.

The Xtreme Bots STEM competition is said to give students an opportunity to design and build a “bot” to compete in matches with others.

“We all have mostly different skill sets that combine to make a good team,” said senior Parker Rings, who was a member of team S.P.E.J. “Some of us helped with programming and the computer aspect, others did the machine work to make the parts, and all of us helped design the actual robot and how the parts would fit together.”

The competition was held in Cincinnati at the Great Oaks Auditorium on April 1.

Earning first place, as well as the award for “Biggest Knockout Punch,” was the team S.P.E.J., made up of Rings, Sofija Keller, Elizabeth Lunne, and James Erwin, with their robot J.I.T. (Just In Time.)

“We’re all very grateful in this class that we have such a big shop and can learn how to use the different machines,” said Keller, who is a senior. “It’s really great to see it all working out at the end. The instant you see your robot move, it makes you really excited.”

Team Asterisk, made up of Quentin Konya, Alyssa Miller, Austin Irlbeck, and Cole Gregory, won second place with their robot, Risk.

In third place comes Team Hungry Hippos with Ashley Arnold, William Lentz, Owen Timmerman, and their robot Gooba.
