19-year-old OSU student falls to his death during spring break; University holds vigil

COLUMBUS — Students at The Ohio State University gathered Monday evening to mourn Henry Meacock who fell to his death during a spring break vacation to Mexico.

Meacock, 19, fell from a balcony on March 15, while on spring break, after he attempted to reach for an item someone dropped, according to fellows friends who traveled with him during the trip.

The news of his death deeply impacted his friends and fellow students. And, in remembrance of his life as well as to mourn a tragic loss, The Ohio State University campus held a vigil open to all students.

WBNS reported from the scene and obtained testimonials from other students and friends regarding the relationship they shared with Meacock.

“I gained a brother for life,” said one of his friends during the candlelight vigil.

“This guy could change the entire atmosphere,” another student recalled.

Danny Meringolo, one of Meacock’s friends, echoed the sentiment stating that Meacock “totally embodied the things that do matter.”

“You know he made you feel special, and I think that’s something that really goes a long way, and you don’t forget those types of things ever,” Meringolo stated.

A nearby, local bar held a fundraiser in Meacock’s honor with all the proceeds going to the deceased’s family.

“The phone call that those parents got, that’s every parent’s worst nightmare. When things go bad on this campus, the community steps up. They stick together and give these kids a place to celebrate his life,” bar owner Scott Ellsworth said.

The Ohio State University also released a statement stating, “Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this exceptionally difficult time.” They also offered students with consultation services and employees with assistance programs to help cope with the loss.

“You die twice. You die first when you stop breathing and you die a second time when someone says your name for the last time. No one will ever say his name for the last time,” said Meringolo.
