“A child will pickup a firearm if they see it,” Streck said. “If you have firearms in your house, just put them somewhere where they are secure.”
Allysa Howard, 20, was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of child endangering. She has not been formally charged.
Streck said the gun was under the bed the boy was sleeping in. The gun was left unsecured and loaded, he added.
There were several other people at the house at the time and they were all asleep when the shooting happened, however were woke up by the gunshot.
The boy was shot in the abdomen and suffered serious injuries.
He was taken to Children’s Hospital.
The mother’s name has not been released pending charges.
