Jeffrey Millerton, 64, died after the fire broke out in the 600 block of Whitmore Avenue Friday, according to the Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger. Millerton died from smoke inhalation and his death has been ruled an accident, Harshbarger said in a media release Wednesday.
Firefighters were dispatched around 11 p.m. Friday and reported smoke coming from outside the house when they arrived.
Firefighters attempted to immediately access the interior but were challenged by “extreme hoarding conditions” throughout the home that obstructed several points of entry, a Dayton Fire Department spokesperson said in a media release.
Crews were able to force entry through a rear window and found an adult male victim who was unconscious.
Millerton was removed to the exterior of the house for further evaluation and treatment, but firefighters determined he was already deceased.
