Election 2020: School levy results roll in for various districts

MIAMI VALLEY — The 5.7 mill levy for Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools appears to be failing as of late Tuesday night.

A mill is the unit value for expressing the rate of property taxes in Ohio, according to the Ohio School Boards Association. Specifically, a mill is one-tenth of a cent.

The results of all school levies are subject to change as votes continue to roll in that were mailed to their local board of elections.

Preliminary Greene County results show that 2,547 (47%) voted for the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School levy and 2,817 (53%) voted against the levy.

In Warren County, four voted in favor of the levy and two voted against the levy.

“It’s going to provide a critical lifeline for us to provide some financial stability so that we can really get back to focusing on the educational piece of school rather than the financial piece,” said Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools Superintendent Douglas Cozad.

If passed, the money will prevent the school district from making 2.5 million in cuts over the next two years.

“It’s a revenue problem and not a spending problem, we have been very frugal,” he said.

The Troy Schools bond issue of 6.54 mills for 37 years did not pass with 2,564 (40%) voting yes and 3,788 (60%) voting no.

“We would like to thank those who did vote yes for our New Plan for Neighborhood schools and to all those who helped in the campaign," said Troy Schools Superintendent Chris Piper.

"We appreciate your support. We understand, however, that in this unprecedented time of uncertainty in American history, trying to pass a bond issue simply was too much to ask. While we respect the election results, it doesn’t change our need for new elementary schools. As our county and our community move forward in the battle against COVID-19, we will continue to look for ways to ensure future learning for our students through new buildings.”
