Kyler Carlile, 31, was sentenced in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court after he pleaded no contest to a charge of vehicular homicide and guilty to a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident earlier this month. Carlile was the driver of a truck that transported Michael Currin, 19, of Cincinnati when Currin either fell or jumped from the truck, causing his fatal injury.

On Monday afternoon, Carlile was sentenced to five years of community control sanctions, 30 days in the Montgomery County Jail on weekends, and will have his driver’s license suspended for two years, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Carlile was also ordered to pay over $22,600 in restitution to cover Currin’s funeral and burial costs, a prosecutor’s office spokesperson said.

Previously, prosecutors said Carlile saw Currin walking on Wayne Avenue in the early morning hours of September, 20, 2020. Investigators said Currin, a first-year student at UD, was walking to pick up a late-night food order when he accepted the ride and was in the back of the pickup truck.

During that drive, Currin either fell or jumped out of the truck. When Carlile noticed Currin was no longer in the bed of the truck, he drove back the way he came and saw the injured Currin lying in the street but Carlile didn’t stop to help or call 911, prosecutors said.

Currin died from his injuries two days later.
