FULL REPORT (Aug. 16)

Thaire (pronounced Tyree) Grissom, the 22-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting outside the Sesame Club Apartments, in the 5900 block of West Third Street in Trotwood, was taken to the Montgomery County Jail on Tuesday night after police investigators questioned him in the slaying of 32-year-old D’juan Norvell, Trotwood Deputy Chief John Porter said.

Norvell was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital. Porter said the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office will review Trotwood’s investigation before formal charges can be approved.

Grissom was arrested at a residence in the 3900 block of Alvin Avenue in Dayton after police tracked him to that address, Porter said. Witnesses told police they saw the suspect leaving the apartments in a vehicle, a 2005 Ford sedan driven by another man.

Police, with service weapons drawn, searched the neighborhood before seizing the vehicle as evidence just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators believe the motive in the shooting was a robbery arising from an illegal drug transaction between Grissom and Norvell. Porter said Grissom has a history of aggravated robbery, weapons violations and drug offenses.

Porter said that according to the investigation, police dispatched just after 1:30 p.m. on a report of a shooting found Norvell lying on the pavement, outside the apartments. He had been shot several times.

“The victim was able to run away, across the parking lot, before he collapsed,” Porter said at the scene. “There were drugs that were located on the victim. We do know this is a high drug-usage area.”

Porter said witnesses told police they saw a 2005 Ford pull up and pick up the shooter. Tuesday night, Porter said police are continuing to look for the person who was driving that vehicle.
