Coronavirus: Losing, avoiding weight gain during the pandemic

KETTERING — Life in lock down has altered the routines of many, creating the perfect situation for weight gain.

Data shows than many people are eating more foods that may contribute to weight gain, according to Kettering Health Network.

Websites like Lose It and Weight Watches reported an increase in candy consumption and carb-heavy foods like bread and noodles recorded by their app users.

70% of WebMD readers in the U.S. cited stress eating as a cause of their weight gain. Closures of fitness centers disrupted workout routines and parents took on additional stress while assisting kids with school work from home.

Kettering Health Network health experts encourage people to create a routine that involves waking up at the same time each day, planning meals and finding ways to work in daily exercise.

Things to incorporate into a new healthy routine include:

  • Eat nutritious foods that are well balanced in micronutrients.
  • Portion meals. Eating too much and too often has become common for some in quarantine.
  • Meal prep to help balance out and portion meals as well as save time.
  • Get active. Plan walks or outdoor activities with friends or family.
  • Practice mental health wellness by taking part in activities that reduce stress levels.
