Coronavirus: Educators take a look at what the upcoming school year may bring

OHIO — The governor is leaving it up to local school boards to decide what to do about the next school year, which brings many challenges.

The biggest decision school districts are facing is deciding whether kids will return to the buildings at all, whether they’ll perhaps return part time.

Beavercreek Superintendent Paul Otten says with that comes a lot of logistical questions. One question Otten faces is what busing will look like if kids need to keep their distance from one another.

"It may take three trips just to pick up kids on a normal route," News Center 7's Jim Otte said.

While adults may be getting used to wearing a mask, especially while shopping or at work, kids and teachers may have to wear them too in the classroom.

This is already in the draft guidelines from the state and among many educators, this is a cause for concern.

While it may at first seem there is plenty of time to decide all this, in reality, next school year is quickly approaching. While districts are wrapping up their current online year, they’re working toward solving their biggest challenges when they set the plan for the fall.

Otte has asked the Governor DeWine multiple times when he'll make a decision about next school year and DeWine has said he's working on it with the State Department of Education with input from local educators.

More detailed guidelines are expected in the next few weeks, if not sooner.
