Champaign County sheriff's deputies are looking for a gunman who tried to rob the Sycamore Market on Wednesday evening, the same gunman they believe may be involved in recent vehicle break-ins in the village of North Lewisburg.

According to the sheriff's office, an employee of the store, 50 N. Sycamore St., was on the phone with the sheriff's office when the gunman walked in just after 6 p.m., brandished a firearm and ordered the caller to give him all the money.

As the caller was attempting to open the register, a vehicle approached the drive-through area of the business. In a Facebook post, detectives said they believe this startled the suspect and caused him to flee out the front door.

He was last seen on foot headed north from the market dressed in jeans, a gray hoodie and carrying a backpack.

Deputies have not ruled out that this same suspect may have been involved in recent vehicle break-ins in the village, where a firearm and several other items (medication, money, gift cards, checkbooks and other items) were stolen.

If you have information about the incident at the market or the recent break-ins, you are asked to contact sheriff's detectives at 937-484-6091.
