WILMINGTON — Wildfires can be impacted greatly by the weather. This is why the National Weather Service has specially trained meteorologists that are dispatched into the fires to help provide weather support to fire crews each year.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington has Incident Meteorologists on staff who can be sent across the country and even the world to help during active fire seasons.

This week, Ryan Fliehman is heading home after helping with the Lofer fire near Whiteriver, AZ (outside of Phoenix on a reservation).
These specially trained, Incident Meteorologist can help fire crews on the ground by forecasting and observing specific weather conditions like wind or thunderstorm development to help better contain a fire. These IMETS are typically deployed for a week or two at a time.
