Dayton Wins a wild game over Presbyterian

The Dayton Flyers came back down 23-0 in the first quarter to beat the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 63-43, Saturday afternoon at Welcome Stadium. UD quarterback Jack Cook threw and ran for three touchdowns as the Flyers scored 49 unanswered points. Cook accounted for over 300 yards of total offense. Dayton improves to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the Pioneer Football League.

The Blue Hose plays a unique brand of football in which they go for it on fourth down, onside kick after scores and go for two points after each touchdown. Presbyterian stunned the Family Weekend crowd at Welcome Stadium taking a 23-0 lead with 1:01 left in the first quarter but Jack Cook’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Luke Brenner cut the deficit to 23-7 after one quarter.

UD got closer with a safety in the third play of the second quarter and Sam Webster’s 21-yard field goal got them to within 23-12. The Flyer defense stopped the Blue Hose on fourth down and they took over at the Presbyterian 47-yard line. Cook hit Andrew Holderer for a nine-yard touchdown pass and another safety got UD closer, 23-22. Jack Cook ran for two more touchdowns before halftime and the Flyers led, 35-23, at the break.

Dayton began the second half with the ball and Cook connected with Tyler Mintz for a five-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 42-23. Michael Neel added a ten-yard touchdown run and UD led, 49-23. Jack Cook and B.K. Doneghy, Jr. each ran for a touchdown before the third quarter and the Flyers led, 63-30. Presbyterian scored two fourth quarter touchdowns.

Dayton’s next game will be Saturday, October 2nd, when they travel to Morehead, KY to play the Morehead State Eagles.
