Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto on IL after positive COVID-19 test

GOODYEAR, Arizona — The Cincinnati Reds placed star first baseman Joey Votto on the team’s injured list after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Votto gave the team permission to release his diagnosis.

According to MLB protocols for the 2021 season, Votto will be required to be away from the team for at least 10 days. Protocols also include a mandatory cardiac evaluation and a determination that he is no longer a risk to infect others.

Votto has appeared in 4 games so far in Spring Training, going 4-9 from the plate with a double and a walk, according to the team.

Opening Day for the Reds is April 1 at 4:10 p.m. against the St. Louis Cardinals.
