According to a Nov. 1 filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, made public on Tuesday, the recall requires a software update.

The recall affects Model S and Model X vehicles spanning the 2017 to 2021 model years, CNBC reported.

According to the filing, an estimated 1% of the recalled vehicles began exhibiting a defect following an October firmware release that caused the affected vehicles to lose power steering when driving over bumpy roads and potholes.

“Reduced or lost power steering assist does not affect steering control, but could require greater steering effort from the driver, particularly at low speeds,” the NHTSA stated.

According to the Austin-based automaker, 97% of the recalled vehicles had installed a new update that addresses the issue by Nov. 1, and no further action is necessary from those owners, CNBC reported.

The company has fielded zero reports of injuries or deaths linked with the recall to date.
