DETROIT — Ford is warning drivers of some of its heavy-duty pickup trucks because the driveshafts can break and cause the vehicle to lose power.
The recall covers certain F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks for model years 2017-2022, The Associated Press reported. Impacted vehicles have gasoline engines and aluminum driveshafts.
According to documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, insulators beneath the vehicle can loosen. If they come into contact with the aluminum driveshaft, they could damage the driveshaft, causing it to fracture. If the driveshaft breaks, the vehicle can lose power, and/or the driver may lose control of the vehicle if the driveshaft touches the ground. A broken driveshaft could also cause the truck to roll if the parking brake is not applied.
The NHTSA estimated 223,628 F-250 vehicles are affected, and another 23,817 F-350 vehicles are affected.
Letters will be sent to customers in April alerting them to the problem, and then the vehicle owners can contact dealers for a repair if necessary.
