PEACHAM, Vt. — Two people were arrested after a woman was found bound with duct tape inside of a truck in St. Johnsbury, officials say.
In a news release, the Vermont State Police said that around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the St. Johnsbury Police Department, St. Johnsbury Fire Department and CALEX Ambulance Service responded to Bay Street for a call about a woman in a vehicle with her hands bound together with duct tape. The woman’s head was also partly covered with a bag and more duct tape, police said. First responders were able to free her and she was taken to the hospital, according to officials. She has since been released.
The victim told police she was picked up on the side of the road in Peacham, where she was restrained and bound, according to WCAX. She said she was driven for hours around the Peacham and Danville area, and that the suspects were threatening her.
She also told police that she was left alone for a bit and was able to break herself free and drive away in the truck to Bay Street, according to WCAX.
The suspects were identified as Mack Varnum, 45, and Nichole Cloutier, 36, according to the Vermont State Police.
Both Varnum and Cloutier were found Friday by state police detectives and field force troopers at Varnum’s house. They were arrested and are set to appear in court for an arraignment on Monday.
Varnum and Cloutier are both facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, unlawful restraint and aggravated assault, according to WCAX. Varnum is also facing an attempted murder charge.
Police said that during their arrest, Janita Ledoux, 35, was at the house and was also arrested for an outstanding warrant for another case.
