A three-story home that was built in the 1870s is on the auction block with a potential $1 starting bid.

There will also be a few fees that go along with the winning price, including a $45 deed fee and a $42 recording fee, the Delaware County auditor’s website says.

The house was built as a private residence. But it has had several lives, including as a fraternity for Ohio Wesleyan University from 1915 to 1961. The home was vacant until it was used as a nursing home from 1963 until 2008, according to a survey conducted on the property.

For the past 13 years, the home has sat vacant and now has more than $150,000 in unpaid property taxes.

The home is part of the county’s forfeited land sale and will have an opening bid for the value of outstanding charges, the county said, but if no one is willing to pay the $150K, the bidding will restart at $1 until an offer is entered.

“This is a rare opportunity for someone to acquire a unique property in a historic part of the city of Delaware,” County Auditor George Kaitsa said in a news release. “And it will be sold to the highest bidder without regard to any of the back taxes or assessments that are owed on the property.”

The asbestos survey contracted by the county noted that the home is in “disrepair due to roof leaks and vandals.” The survey did find asbestos in some of the flooring and glazings on older windows that would have to be removed by a state-certified asbestos abatement contractor before any renovations or demolition can proceed.

The auction will be held at the Hayes Services Building in Delaware, Ohio, and all interested parties must register and receive a bid card to participate in the auction on March 15.
