California zoo welcomes baby anteater

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno Chaffee Zoo announced Thursday that its giant anteater had given birth to a female pup.

The zoo shared the happy news in a Facebook post that included a picture of the infant. In the post, the zoo said the baby’s name is Ají and she was born to Chive.

According to the zoo, anteaters are only pregnant for about 190 days. In the wild, the baby is suckled for about six months, but stays with its mother until it is fully grown.

Baby Ají will be carried on Chive’s back for several months, and will be brought out to the exhibit so that guests will be able to see her this spring, KFSN reported.

The Dudley Zoo, in the United Kingdom, also recently welcomed a baby giant anteater pup, which it announced March 8 is named Gizmo.
